In the 2025 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, 39% of renovating homeowners chose engineered quartz and 19% chose granite. Solid surface does not dominate those headlines, and yet it keeps winning very specific jobs in our shop: long runs without a visible joint, curved bar tops, and bathrooms where the homeowner wants the sink to disappear into the deck.
What Solid Surface Actually Is
Solid surface is a manufactured sheet of acrylic or polyester resin blended with natural mineral fillers. The color runs all the way through the thickness of the sheet.
That last part matters more than anything else on this page. Because the material is homogeneous, a scratch, a scorch ring, or a chipped corner can be sanded out and re-polished right in your kitchen. Stone cannot be repaired that way.
Sheets arrive thinner than a stone slab and get built up at the edge to look thicker. Most of what you see as a heavy solid surface edge is two layers laminated together and shaped.
Pro Tip: Acrylic sheet is made in batches, and whites and light solids drift slightly from lot to lot. If you think you may add an island, a bar return, or a matching vanity later, buy that material now and store it. A color ordered eighteen months from now will seam in cleanly but read a shade off under LED lighting.
Corian, Hi-Macs, and the Brand Question
Corian has been around since the 1960s and the name became shorthand for the entire category, the way people say Kleenex for tissue. Hi-Macs is the other brand name Milwaukee homeowners bring up most often.
The solid surface colors on display in our showroom come from Corian and Wilsonart. If you are cross-shopping a Hi-Macs color you saw at a design center, bring the color name to your appointment and we will show you where it lands against what we carry. Performance differences between the major acrylic brands are small. The color and pattern differences are not.

The Seam Is the Selling Point
Solid surface pieces are joined with a color-matched adhesive and then sanded flat across the joint. Done right, you can run your hand over the seam and not find it.
The same chemistry lets us bond a sink bowl directly to the underside of the deck with no rim, no clips, and no caulk line to turn gray. For a busy family bathroom, that detail alone is often the reason the material gets specified.
Pro Tip: Inside corners need a radius, not a sharp 90 degrees. An L-shaped run with a square inside corner concentrates stress at exactly that point, and that is where cracks start months after install. We cut a coved radius and reinforce the underside with a strip of the same material. If a fabricator quotes you a square inside corner, ask why.
Where It Wins and Where It Does Not
It wins on repairability, integral bowls, tight radius curves, long uninterrupted runs, and a nonporous surface that never needs sealing. Our care and maintenance guidance for solid surface is about as simple as it gets.
It loses on heat. A 400 degree pan set directly on acrylic will leave a mark, and in a bad case it will craze the surface. Trivets are not optional here. If you cook hard and refuse to use them, look at our quartz surfaces or natural stone instead.
Pro Tip: The dishwasher is the quiet killer. Steam venting from the door rises straight into the built-up front edge and works on the adhesive line year after year. A heat deflector strip above the dishwasher opening solves it. Ask any fabricator you talk to whether theirs is included.
What We Need From Your Site
Solid surface is not self-supporting the way thick stone is. It needs continuous substrate under the deck and level cabinets under that.
Before we template, get your cabinet run shimmed and level. A twist of even a quarter inch across a long bank will telegraph through a seam once the material is bonded flat, and there is no adjusting it afterward. Our project process lays out exactly where template falls in the schedule.
